Welcome to Spruce & Petal Flower Farm, where flowers are grown with love in our suburban backyard in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. We’re Mary and Hao, a husband and wife crew passionate about providing locally grown flowers to our community and providing habitat for pollinators.

The farm began as an oasis for local bees and butterflies. Our favorite time of year is when the Sweet Joe Pye Weed and Meadow Blazing Stars are blooming, bringing in up to 15 Monarch butterflies daily. We could watch them gracefully float around the backyard all day! We have been gardening for over 6 years and our love of viewing happy butterflies and bees continues to grow.

We started growing a few cut flower varieties a couple of seasons ago and fell in love. We also learned that the cut flower industry in the U.S. imports 80% of cut flowers from overseas, mostly from Columbia and Ecuador. These countries use toxic chemicals to grow these flowers. Toxic to the point that farmers are harvesting in full body protective gear and florists have to wear gloves to handle them. So we have decided to turn our love of gardening into a way to offer clean blooms to our community that didn’t have to travel thousands of miles to end up in our grocery stores.

We believe in regenerative farming practices and supporting our beneficial insects. We do not spray any insecticides, herbicides, or fungicides on our farm. Many of our flowers are grown with care from seed using coco coir instead of peat moss. Coco coir is a renewable by-product from processing coconuts for sale while peat moss is harvested from fragile bog ecosystems. Harvesting peat moss also releases centuries of sequestered carbon into the atmosphere, which severely accelerates climate change. In addition, we use only organic fertilizers and compost to feed our little beauties.

Once you start growing flowers, you can’t stop. There’s something about sowing a seed, nursing into a seedling, planting it out into your garden, and harvesting it to make an arrangement or bouquet for yourself or a loved one. Or enjoying them in your garden, gathering their seed, and starting the process again.

We offer gorgeous seasonal bouquets through our home farm stand to help our community celebrate special occasions, thank someone for the help, put a smile on someone’s face, or just to treat yourself to a little something magical. We want to be a part of those special moments. Every stem makes life a little brighter.
